INSTRUCTIONS: How to use this Archive

General

The entire archive is sub-divided into so-called Albums, which are generally collections of photographs taken by individuals, with titles denoting the individual, the time and place, and maybe some other details.

Some Albums are themselves sub-divided, with headings that give rather more information than the Album title

There has been no attempt to select, edit or sort contributors' photographs. Usually, the title for each photo is simply a number or other descriptor given by the photographer. At this stage, the intention is for the user (i.e. anyone) to browse through and select whatever photos they want to use. If you then inform the Archivists, this photo (these photos) can be placed in the "Specially Selected" Album, so saving others the task or browsing a large number of photos. If you also provide the Archivist with additional information (time, place, people involved, etc.), this information can be added under the photo. Eventually, a sub-set of selected photos with useful detail may emerge.

Within each Album, photographs are shown as miniatures, or "thumbnails". A click on one of these will (usually) bring up a larger version (600x800px) suitable for closer inspection, or downloading for use in a website or Word document. By request to the Archivists, the original version of any photo can be provided, in whatever resolution it was originally submitted. All that is needed is sufficient reference to identify the photo concerned, e.g. Album number and photo ID.

Specific Instructions

  1. Move down the page until the Table of Albums appears
  2. Scan through and select an Album you wish to browse
  3. Select GO for that Album, and a new page appears.
  4. Either (for small Albums) this contains a set of thumbnail photograps, or it contains a set of sub-album headings. In the latter case, select one appropriate to your needs. If necessary, repeat the procedure until a set of thumbnails appears.
  5. Browse through the thumbnails (Note: there are usually several pages of these, with a limit of 24 photos per page). If you want to examine one more closely, click the mouse over the thumbnail and a larger version (600x800px) appears.
  6. If you decide the larger version is suitable for your needs, the picture may be automatically downloaded by clicking on the symbol immediately under the bottom right hand corner of the picture. This downloads the 600x800 version of the picture into your browser (Firefox, Internet explorer, or whatever). You can save this in the usual way (put the mouse pointer over the picture, depress the right hand mouse button, select "save as", and give the browser somewhere to save the picture).
  7. If you decide you like the picture, but need a larger, more detailed version, the reference number is either under the thumbnail, or will show if the mouse pointer is placed over the thumbnail. Alternatively, far more information (not always useful) can be obtained if you right click on the picture and select "properties". In any event, make a note of the picture reference number. Later, contact the Archivist with sufficient details (e.g. Album number, picture number), and the picture as originally submitted can be sent to you. Sometimes this is in very high resolution and entails a large file, so it may be necessary to correspond further with the Archivist to ensure you get what you need.

This archive will be progressively documented, and is provided at this initial stage for two purposes: to encourage everyone who has photographs suitable for this archive to come forward and offer them for inclusion in this collection; and to solicit comments and information about any of the photographs, particularly to identify people and/or elaborate on the occasion recorded in the photograph. The archive will eventually be moved to the main Archaeology Website.

If you can contribute, please contact the archivists
